Toll system in Bulgaria

What it is and how it works

General information

Electronic charging of road taxes in Bulgaria was introduced in 2019, when the then existing vignette stickers were replaced with electronic ones. On 01.03.2020 toll charging started for all road vehicles with a total technically permissible maximum mass over 3.5 t.

The collected financial resources will be used to maintain existing ones, build new roads, improve road safety.

The toll collection system has been developed with modern technologies that allow convenient payment and easy control without interfering with or slowing down the free movement of road vehicles.

The system introduces a fair charging model based on good European practices. Similar toll systems operate in Germany, Belgium, Slovakia, Hungary and the Czech Republic.

The Bulgarian toll system is technologically modern and is one of the most modern in Europe. It uses GNSS technology (global navigation satellite system) and obeys the principle of free flow – if the driver has chosen to use a GNSS device, then the reporting is done automatically and there is no need to stop for payment.

Stationary cameras and mobile teams detect the passage of vehicles, recognize registration numbers and register the correct or incorrect use of the toll road network.

Which road vehicles fall within the scope of the toll system?

All road vehicles for carriage of goods or passengers with a total technically permissible maximum mass exceeding 3.5 t.

How are toll fees determined?

The price per kilometer of distance travelled varies depending on:

  • gross vehicle weight
  • number of axles
  • the ecological category and
  • the class of the road.

How can I pay?

There are 2 ways to use the system:

  • via a route pass with a pre-selected route or
  • automatic tracking with an on-board device or a certified GPS device (contract required).
